MEDICINAL PLANTS IN COSTA RICA

The rain forest is full of medicinal plants that have been used for centuries by both aborigines and modern society. Many of the pharmaceuticals we use today are extracted from plants hence the bitter taste that we get from pills due to the alkaloids. These alkaloids are produced by the plants as a self defense mechanism to deter would be predators from chomping on them.

Those that grew up in Costa Rica, especially those that grew up in countryside, have experienced a mother, grandmother or family member giving them an herbal concoction to remedy some form of ailment, bruise or sore. These remedies then get passed on from generation to generation although some disappear from modern day generations depending on big pharma.

Here is a list of a few medicinal plants that you can find right at home:

  • Cilantro
  • Cinnamon
  • Papaya
  • Ginger
  • Hibiscus
  • Basil
  • Oregano

There are many more to be mentioned but we would need to much space or write a book instead of a blog.
