Thanksgiving Dinner in Costa Rica

Thanksgiving is one of the most celebrated American holidays in Costa Rica. Many expats look forward to Thanksgiving dinner for that taste of home that brings memories racing through taking you back to when you would gather with all your uncles, aunts, cousins and grandparents.

A wonderful time when the boys gather in the yard to play with the adults a fun game of football, landing a tackle into the raked autumn leaves piled in sectors of the yard.  Grandma would then call everyone to the table and bring out a juicy turkey to accompany all the delights that are already on the table. Sweet potatoes and marshmallows, cranberry salad, GRAVY and of course... stuffing!

But before anyone could begin to eat, a prayer would be said in thankfulness. Then every member of the family would share some of the things they were thankful for. A humbling experience that would really remind you of how blessed we are. And of course grandpa would share the Thanksgiving story before the whole family would sit and watch the parade or football game. At night everyone gathers to play board games while or playing hide and go seek with flashlights.

This same story has been shared by many expats with their Tico families while they show them how a Thanksgiving dinner is prepared. Nobody can resist not wanting to do it over every year, adopting this American holiday.

If you are in Costa Rica during Thanksgiving, don't be shy... share this beautiful tradition with your Costa Rican hosts.
